Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy has reiterated his stance on advocating for longer work hours. Murthy, known for his influential role in India’s IT sector, faced criticism after suggesting that Indian youth should work for 70 hours per week to bolster the nation’s economy. Murthy’s advice received a mixed reaction, with many expressing disagreement with the idea of working such long hours.
Highlighting his commitment to his advice, Murthy stated that he would not have offered such guidance without having practiced it himself. He also acknowledged the dedication of less privileged individuals who already work tirelessly to make ends meet. Murthy claimed that his advice had been well-received by his Western friends, NRIs, and many individuals in India. He emphasised that the concept of hard work is common in India, drawing parallels between 70-hour work weeks and the demanding schedules of farmers and factory workers.
Wakefit Co-Founder Chaitanya Ramalingegowda On 70-Hour Work Week
Chaitanya Ramalingegowda, co-founder of Wakefit, shared a message on LinkedIn and posted a humorous video stressing the importance of rest. However, Ramalingegowda’s message took a satirical tone, advocating for 70-hour work weeks as a necessary requirement for growth and productivity. He also shared the video emphasising the importance of sleep and health in achieving success, suggesting that organizations should prioritize employee well-being while promoting growth.
Chaitanya Ramalingegowda shared the post on LinkedIn and wrote, “We at Wakefit have been following this debate for a while now. With the start of a new financial year and appraisal season in top gear, today seems to be a good time to share our views. Yes, we sincerely believe we should all put in 70 hours every week for maximum productivity. A growing economy like ours needs the 70 hour contribution from every team member year after year. Honestly, it is not asking for much. Our strong stand on 70-hour-weeks is elaborated in this video. Hope more organisations make this a stringent requirement for growth.
In the video, it can be seen that organisations should make 70 hours of sleep a week a necessary bar for growth and development, if your health and sleep is good, then no one can stop you from being successful.
