Popular dairy brand Amul, known for its tagline ‘Taste of India’, has expanded its reach to the international market by introducing fresh milk products in the United States. This marks the first time Amul’s fresh range will be available outside India, a significant milestone for the brand.
Partnership with Michigan Milk Producers Association
Amul has partnered with the Michigan Milk Producers Association, a 108-year-old dairy cooperative in the US, to bring its fresh milk products to American consumers. The announcement was made at the association’s annual meeting in Detroit on March 20, showcasing Amul’s commitment to global expansion.
Vision for Growth
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), expressed enthusiasm about the launch, highlighting Amul’s aspiration to become the largest dairy company. Mehta referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for Amul during its golden jubilee celebrations, emphasizing the brand’s entrepreneurial spirit and growth potential.
Impact of Amul’s Legacy
Prime Minister Modi, speaking at Amul’s golden jubilee celebration, praised the brand’s evolution from a humble beginning to a global dairy powerhouse. Amul’s products are now exported to over 50 countries, a testament to its success and impact on the dairy industry.
Role in India’s Dairy Sector Growth
Amul’s journey mirrors the transformation of India’s dairy sector, from a milk-deficit nation to the world’s largest milk producer. The establishment of dairy cooperatives, spearheaded by initiatives like Operation Flood, has been instrumental in this growth. Verghese Kurien, known as the “Father of White Revolution,” played a pivotal role in shaping India’s dairy landscape.
Operation Flood and NDDB
Operation Flood, launched in the 1960s, aimed to replicate the successful ‘Anand pattern’ of dairy cooperatives across India. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), led by Kurien, was instrumental in implementing this program, revolutionizing the dairy sector and making India a global leader in milk production.
